Inquiry Unit – Appropriate use of Social Media – Introduction

This term we will be inquiring into the appropriate use of social media. Social media has taken the world by storm and now dominates the lives of many people around the world. Social media has many benefits to society, however when it is not used appropriately it can have dangerous consequences.

During the inquiry unit you will be required to complete a number of task. Your main tasks will be a graph displaying data about social media, a powerful persuasive piece of writing and a well-presented video clip. You can refer to your checklist for a thorough list of what you be required to do.

Today, we have three videos that we will watch separately and then discuss and complete some small tasks.

–       What is the purpose of social media? Explain.

–       What are the benefits of social media to society? Explain.

–       Describe the different ways that social media can be misused.

–       How can social media be harmful to people?

– What are the consequences of using social media incorrectly?

Teen Social Networking Use

  • 73% of teens are on a social network
  • The average teen has 201 Facebook friends
  • 37% send messages to friends every day
  • 8% of American teens use Twitter

What Teens do on Facebook

  • 86% of social network-using teens comment on a friend’s wall
  • 83% comment on friends’ pictures
  • 66% send private messages to friends
  • 58% send IM or text messages using the site
  • 52% send group messages

What Else Happens on Facebook

  • 55% of teens have given out personal info to someone they don’t know, including photos and physical descriptions
  • 29% of teens have posted mean info, embarrassing photos or spread rumors about someone
  • 29% have been stalked or contacted by a stranger or someone they don’t know
  • 24% have had private or embarrassing info made public without their permission
  • 22% have been cyberpranked

    Today for inquiry, I learnt that social media websites such as Facebook, are incredibly popular. Facebook is so popular it has more than 955 million users on there.

    I found it interesting that 955million people use face book all over the world.
    Also 200 million facebook acounts were made in one year.

    I learnt that social media and cyber can efeect jobs when you older!

  4. Today one of the many things I have learnt today is that there are more Facebook accounts then cars!!! This surprised me because cars have been around for a lot longer than Facebook accounts. I wonder if this fact counts all the cars that have been scrapped.

  5. I learnt that lots of people use social media and that lots of people say mean things about other people. Some statistics I learnt are that there are 225,000,000 users on twitter. Facebook is the most visited website on the internet ( reaching one trillion page views on June 30th 2011).

  6. I have learnt that when you are on the internet, you have got to be careful and not share ANY personal detail about yourself, where your school is or about your family. Whatever is on the internet, stays on the internet. I love inquiry Friday.

  7. Everything you put on social media/internet can stay on the internet forever, which means it may affect your chances of getting jobs when you’re older.

    Facebook, There are more facebook users than cars. (800 million vs 750 million)
    Twitter, Lady gaga is is most followed person on twitter with over 17.8m followers.

    If you have Facebook then you need to have a group or your favourite animal and don’t have your personal details in and do not put your school logo on facebook.
    Over 60./. precent of people online Facebook to stalk their xs .
    Facebook is an online social networking service. Its name comes from a colloquialism for the directory given to students at some American universities.
