ANZAC DAY – LOOK AND LEARN

When war broke out in 1914, Australia had been a federal commonwealth for only 13 years. The new national government was eager to establish its reputation among the nations of the world. In 1915 Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the allied navies. The ultimate objective was to capture Constantinople (now Istanbul in Turkey), the capital of the Ottoman Empire, an ally of Germany.

The Australian and New Zealand forces landed on Gallipoli on 25 April, meeting fierce resistance from the Ottoman Turkish defenders. What had been planned as a bold stroke to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915 the allied forces were evacuated, after both sides had suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8,000 Australian soldiers had been killed. News of the landing on Gallipoli had made a profound impact on Australians at home, and 25 April soon became the day on which Australians remembered the sacrifice of those who had died in the war.

Although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives, the Australian and New Zealand actions during the campaign left us all a powerful legacy. The creation of what became known as the “Anzac legend” became an important part of the identity of both nations, shaping the ways they viewed both their past and their future.

Why is ANZAC Day special to Australians? Explain in detail?

ANZAC day is important to Australians because it shows all the other countries that we are strong, respectful, and trustworthy because we fight for our own country. ANZAC day is also important to us Australians because we care if a lot of our nationality dies and we show it by having memorials to celebrate their lives and by also having this holiday. It is time that Australia had become our own nation and that we stop fighting with the English. We also celebrate it to show everyone that we have enough guts to sacrifice our lives for our country.

Describe how the Australian soldiers may have felt as they fought for our country?

I think that it would be very depressing for the soldiers to fight in the war because they don’t want to die but they also don’t want to let our country down. They are two very hard choices to choose between. I also think that the soldiers would feel incredibly annoyed because they want to spend all the time they can with their family but they have to fight to keep us safe.

The soldiers would have felt petrified because they did not know how huge of a bunch they had to fight face to face. They would have felt brave because they put their lives first and saved ours. It would be frightening also for the families of the soldiers at home who were anxiously waiting for their beloved ones to return home from war. Unfortunately for some families that didn’t happen.
