The World Cup – Look and Learn

The FIFA World Cup™ is the biggest single-event sporting competition in the world and is contested by the senior men’s national teams from the 208 Member Associations of FIFA.

The competition has been played every four years since the inaugural tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not held because of the Second World War.

It fulfils FIFA’s objectives to touch the world, develop the game, and build a better future through a variety of ways.
Tournament format

The current format of the tournament involves 32 teams competing for the title at venues within the host nation(s) over a period of one month – this phase is often called the Final Competition. A qualification phase, the Preliminary Competition which currently takes place over the preceding three years, is used to determine which teams qualify for the tournament together with the host nation(s).

The preliminary competition for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ sees a total of 204 entries across six continents competing for 31 available spots. For the last FIFA World Cup, 200 teams played a total of 853 matches as 31 teams qualified for South Africa.

Both the preliminary and final competitions act as a massive promotion for the game of football and for the host nation(s) and are therefore wonderful opportunities to help promote values of respect, fair play and discipline to the watching world.

Understandably, the organisation of such an event is a huge task for FIFA and the Local Organising Committee and is therefore one of the main activities of FIFA over a four-year period.

Facts and figures

The 19 FIFA World Cup tournaments have been won by eight different national teams. Brazil have won five times, and they are the only team to have played in every tournament. The other winners are Italy, with four titles; Germany, with three wins; Argentina and inaugural winners Uruguay, with two; and England, France, and Spain, with one title each.

The FIFA World Cup is the world’s most widely viewed sporting event; an estimated 715.1 million people watched the final match of the 2006 FIFA World Cup held in Germany and the 2010 event in South Africa was broadcast to 204 countries on 245 different channels. Inside the stadiums, a total of 3,170,856 spectators attended the 64 matches an average of 49,670 per match and the third highest aggregate attendance behind USA 1994 and Germany 2006.

There were also over six million people who attended public viewing events in 16 sites across the world: ten within South Africa and a further six across the globe in Rome, Paris, Berlin, Sydney, Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro. A total of 350,000 fans attended the International FIFA Fan Fest in Berlin for the semi-final match between Germany and Spain.

177,853 accreditations for the last FIFA World Cup were printed, while the hospitality programme attracted almost a quarter of a million guests. Over three quarters of a million litres of beer were sold in the stadiums and 390,600 hot dogs were sold in the public catering concessions; many to the half a million international visitors who descended on South Africa.

The FIFA World Cup brings in much needed resources from partners and the TV rights which allows FIFA to invest in social activities related to the tournament. For South Africa 2010, the 20 Centres for 2010 campaign was launched, aiming promote public health, education and football in disadvantaged communities across Africa. A FIFA World Cup also creates resources for many extra development programmes which proved to be beneficial for member associations of FIFA throughout the course of the four-year cycle.

The next three World Cups will be hosted by Brazil in 2014, Russia in 2018, and Qatar in 2022.

  1. I think the the World Cup Is the biggest thing in the world because in the World Cup 32 countries compete in the world cup. 32countries compete for the allayment prize the title. To qualify for the World Cup your country must beat other countries to qualify in the world cup. To repo sent your country and play on a olympic filled would be a privilege because you. Have done all the hard work at training and in the. Gym and to play it would feel nervous and excited to play in the World Cup.

  2. I think it is popular because people want to see there country’s win the World Cup. I think is popular because people bet on there teams.i think it’s popular because it represents there country.

It would feel amazing to represent my country in the World Cup. I would try my hardest to win to prove that we can win the World Cup. I would feel happy for getting though qualifying.

  3. – Explain why you think the world cup the most popular event in the world.

    – Describe what it would be like to represent your country at the world cup.
It would be scary because you don’t want to embarrass your country and it would suck because everybody would be calling your country terrible and you would have to redeem yourself from being bad.

    – Explain why you think soccer commentators and players get so excited after they score a goal.
I think they get so excited because it’s hard to kick a goal and then you would have to do it all over again and it would get exhausting over amount of time because it’s hard work to run down all of the field and then do it all over again.

  4. I think the World Cup is so famous because so many country’s play soccer /football and a lot of country’s get to play in the World Cup and it a very fun sport. It’s also very famous and watched by millions because it very hard to get a goal and the people that play have so much skills that they win and defend.

It would be amazing but still scary because your whole country is depending on you and your team to win the World Cup. I would still feel glad to play for my country and to try my best. Also it would be depressing if I lost the World Cup but I would keep on going on for my country.

I think that the soccer players jump around and shout because it’s very hard to get a goal because of all of the other players defending the goal and on the field. Plus it’s fun getting a goal and they shout because the got an amazing goal or maybe won the final goal.
I think that the spectators/commentators also shout when a player scores a goal because the player that got the goal was playing for the spectators/commentator country,or because it was such the player may of scored an amazing goal.

  5. The World Cup is so poplar because there is bigger challenges other country’s to try to be the best team and win the World Cup to represent there country. It also represents good players trying to the best player on the field.

It would be awesome to represent your country because you get show that you are the best and be the best team in the World Cup and win the grand final while under pressure and still get goals to win every game and even when you don’t win you still can when games.

  6. – Explain why you think the world cup is the most popular event in the world.
I think it is the most famous sport because every county in the world plays it and because county’s teams might get in and every in the county watches it and it is one of the most played sports in the world. And it gets county’s that hate each other together and people want to watch the best players play.

    – Describe what it would be like to represent your country at the world cup.
It would be hart pounding to represent your county because you are playing with your whole county is watching you and you would have a lot of pressure on you if you had a chance to kick a goal to win the game because it is so hard to win a game.

  7. – Explain why you think the world cup is the most popular event in the world.

I think the World Cup is the most popular sport in the world because it is a world wide event, everyone gets together and supports there team because Australian football rules is a really popular sport in Australia but it’s not a world wide event why it’s more popular then Australian football rules. I also think this because it’s so big and all 208 countries have to compete in it. Most people have to train for Three .years before they get in and there country feels for them if they don’t get in but if they get in the hole country celebrates and gets really happy and existed to support in the World Cup that’s why every one likes the World Cup.

    – Describe what it would be like to represent your country at the world cu

I think it would be horrible to be in the World Cup because if you train for three years and you don’t get in you will be hart broken or if you get in then you make it all the way then lose you will feel like you let your team and your country down even know you probably didn’t but you would feel like you did and then you will go back and be sad until the next four years until it’s on again. Some of the World Cup would be good like if you get in or if you win the World Cup it would be amazing to win but it would be really unlikely if any teams win it’s all skills and luck.

If I was at the World Cup I would here the cheering of the crowd and the mud flicking in my face and my soccer shoes clutching to the ground as I walk to kick a goal for my country
